Engadget claim to have got wind of that the upcoming ARM-based Surface RT tablet are going to cost $199. Unbelievable isn't it? Engadget claims that Microsoft held a session at the recent TechReady15 conference in which all the launch details were laid out. If true, the Surface RT would squarely be in competition with the Kindle Fire and the Nexus 7 tablets. We can almost hear the sound of some people in Mountain View and Cupertino quacking in their boots.

Although $199 would be fabulous for users, it likely to enrage Microsoft's partners. The Windows RT license costs almost half of the rumoured price, leaving OEMs no room to compete. Another issue is that with this rumour circling the tech space, people are now going to expect a $199 Surface tablet and if it turns out not to be true, they are going to feel really disappointed. Microsoft should now move swiftly to quash the rumour if it's not true.

The Surface for Windows RT tablet is rumoured be launching October 26th, with the Pro version following on three months later. Will you be getting one? Let us know below...
