Laser Leisure updated to v1.1

March 30, 2012 at 21:51 GMT | By

In Laser Leisure you need to arrange optical tools on a workbench in order to get a fixed laser shoot at a target. There are normal mirrors and semipermeable ones that reflect the light and let some light pass through. The prisms make the laser split into two beams. The levels begin quite easy. Set up one or two mirrors or prisms and the job is done. Later you will experience harder challenges where you need to use wood to block laser beams or avoid explosives.
There are 30 levels in three different difficulty stages. Each stage has an online leaderboard.

Version 1.1:
• fixed problems when entering a new stage after completing the first stage
• fixed problems with the back button in pause mode

Get the free game by scanning the QR code or clicking the download button below.

Marketplace Deal of the Week: Puzzle Quest 2

March 28, 2012 at 11:51 GMT | By

Forget being the best: Puzzle Quest is a testament to the fearsome power of clever mediocrity. With the first game in the series, Infinite Interactive took a not-always-convincing coating of RPG ideas, slapped it onto a so-so match-three chassis, and the result still managed to captivate and ultimately consume most of its players. You enjoy Puzzle Quest, perhaps, with the part of your brain that decided that you should really paint the inside of your house magnolia. In fact, playing Puzzle Quest is probably as close as you can get to painting your brain magnolia, too.

Puzzle Quest 2 is available for $4.99 for a limited time.

Nokia Lumia 900 vs iPhone 4s [video]

March 28, 2012 at 01:00 GMT | By

Alex has upladoed a video pitting the Nokia Lumia 900 vs the iPhone 4s as he had promised.

The iPhone appears to edge out the Lumia 800 in rendering internet pages and a few other tasks, but what more evident is the guy's inept use of Windows Phone and how he annoyingly contiues to call it Windows Mobile.

16 megapixel HTC Titan II also coming on April 8th

March 26, 2012 at 21:32 GMT | By

With the Nokia Lumia 900 grabbing all the headlines lately (see how it managed to squeeze it's self in here), the HTC Titan 2 has almost been forgotten about. Not much has been said about the device since it was announced at CES '12 back in February. The Verge reports that alongside the Lumia 900, AT&T will be bringing the HTC Titan II to its shelves on April 8th. The Titan 2 of course comes with eye-watering specs, but unfortunately it going to cost $199.99 with a 2 year contract which sounds really steep compared to the Nokia Lumia 900

The HTC Titan II is 4G LTE-equipped. It sports the biggest touchscreen of any Windows Phone (4.7-inch WVGA). It also comes with a whopping 16-megapixel rear camera. For perspective, that's double what you find on most smartphones, and it makes the Titan II one of the most potent pocket-size cameras.

The Titan II has a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera for video chat. Its big rear camera, meanwhile, features a fast wide-angle lens (f2.6, 28mm), autofocus, and dual LED flash. Shutterbugs will appreciate extras like red eye reduction, image stabilization, a panorama mode for landscapes, and a burst shot mode for sports or kids. Want to make movies? The rear camera records 720p HD video

AT&T has confirmed to CNET that the Lumia 900 will be hitting U.S. retailers on April 8th, for $99.99 on a two-year contract - a great price for the flagship smartphone me thinks!

Nokia Windows Phone 8 devices to be 'incredible' and 'unbelievable'

March 26, 2012 at 12:51 GMT | By

Meetmeego.org's Cosimo Kroll claims to have met a Nokia employee who told him that Nokia's Whindows Phone 8 (Apollo) offerings will be incredible and unbelievable. The devices are apparently nothing like the current Lumia line-up. It's unclear as to how many devices this source was talking about but we are pretty sure one of them will be the rumoured 'superphone' codenamed 'Prodigy.'

Apparently, we are meant to believe this Nokia employee because he currently uses a Nokia N9 because he doesn't like the current Nokia Windows Phones. Sounds like someone wants to suffer the Joe Marini fate here.

Bitter fAndroid slams Smoked By Windows Phone Challenge

March 26, 2012 at 11:01 GMT | By

Sahas Katta of Skattertech.com claims he was cheated by a Microsoft Store employee in the Smoked By Windows Phone $1000 Challenge. Mr Katta claims that he went along to the Santa Clara Microsoft Store after hearing about the Windows Phone challenge. He armed himself with a Samsung Galaxy Nexus with widgets galore:

After signing a waiver agreeing to let Microsoft use a photo of me in their advertising, I got in line for the challenge. I was using a Samsung Galaxy Nexus which runs the latest Android operating system on the Verizon Wireless network. As requested, I shut down my phone and powered it on in front of an employee when it was my turn. (I'm assuming they don't want anyone pre-launching any apps in advance.)

The Microsoft Store employee I was up against then explained the selected challenge. Her exact words were the following: "bring up the weather of two different cities." The one who could do that first would win. I felt like I struck gold since I knew I already had two weather widgets on my home screen: one for my current location (San Jose, CA) and another for Berkeley, CA.

After a three-second count down, I hit the power button on my phone and said "DONE!" out loud. I had disabled the lock screen entirely, which is a rather awesome out-of-the-box feature of Android that takes you straight to the home screen with a single push of the power button. I didn't even need to touch the screen, since the two weather widgets were already there.

My opponent finished a split-second later. She had two live tiles on her home screen displaying the weather of two different cities as well. Why does it take longer on Windows Phone? She had to perform two actions. First, she hit the power button to turn on the screen. Second, she had to swipe away the lock screen. That's pretty much as fast as it gets on that platform. Windows Phone takes two interactions. Android takes just one.

Obviously, Mr Katta was clever and well prepared for the challenge but there are a few things to mention. Smoked By Windows Phone has always been nothing more that an advertising gimmick. There are a thousand things that a Windows Phone can do batter that an Android/iPhone and otherwise. Windows Phone is a polished and smooth operating system that does not necessarily need multiple core processors to but with the latest hig-end Android phones running quad-core processors, the difference between is immeasurable.

The truth is that we will never know if Mr Katta's account is not manifestly unfounded but it's worth mentioning that he was very lucky to receive the challenge he was most prepared for. Like I said before, if he did indeed win without altering the default behaviour of the Android OS or installing a 3rd party app to disable the lock screen, then it certainly leaves a bitter taste...

TechFeedTV have followed up their "unboxing" of the Nokia Lumia 900 with a ten minute walk through of the device. The guy doing the walk through is called "Enrique" does it in a new user perspective.

Like all the other people that do not understand Windows Phone, "Enrique" complains about the availability of apps. To be honest, there is isn't much to see here except how stunning the device looks.

Nokia Lumia Phones Getting Tethering Update

March 25, 2012 at 19:05 GMT | By

The Nokia Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 are set to receive the Internet Sharing feature via a future update. Plaffo.com claim to have received a tip from the Three network in Italy that this update will be delivered later this month.

We expect the update to be made available in the next six day, well, considering that there is only six days left in the month of March. It's unclear as to whether this update will be for the Lumia 800 only, but we suspect that it will be available for the Lumia 710 given that the lower specced Lumia 610 rumoured to have internet sharing. The Nokia Lumia 900 and Lumia 610 will both come with the feature built-in.

Nokia seems to be bent on getting all their devices up to date and full-featured while the likes of Samsung and HTC are resting on their laurels. The Windows Phone update system is a massive let down now. Microsoft always led us to believe that Windows Phone will not be fragmented like Android. If this is not this is not fragmentation then what is?

Nokia: We are now King Windows Phone OEM

March 24, 2012 at 23:02 GMT | By

It's not too long ago we HTC were telling us they were the biggest Windows Phone OEM volume-wise. With sporadic releases, recycled designs and a lack of advertising, it's not taken long the new boy Nokia to assume HTC's position. In fact, it's taken roughly 6 months for Nokia to dethrone HTC. Their first Windows Phone, the Lumia 800, was released in November 2011. Kantar recently revealed Nokia was responsible for 87% of Windows Phone 7 sales in UK in the 3 months ending February 19th.

Nokia's Vice-president of Nokia Middle Ease has stated in an interview with Gulf News that they're now the biggest Windows Phone manufacturer:

Our strategy is working. When we formed an alliance last year with Microsoft our intention was to regain lost share. After one year, it is still working. We are the number one Windows phone in volume in the world. Our momentum is accelerating.

We plan to introduce and bring to markets new and more affordable products with more modern user experiences with Windows Phone in 2012. We will launch Lumia series when Arabic support is ready

We always knew that Windows Phone only needed an OEM that believed in it. Now coupled with carrier support, this could be a mega year for Windows Phone

AT&T Nokia Lumia 900 Unboxing [video]

Here is what is probably the first unboxing video of the AT&T Nokia Lumia 900. TechFeedTV got the unenviable (sic) task of the removing the the almight device from the box. It took them a full 7 minutes to unbox the black version of the Lumia 900.

One thing worth mentioning is that the headphones seem to be missing. We hope it's the guy on the video that forgot to put them back in rather that Nokia!

Smoked By Windows Phone: Microsoft ups the stake to $1000

March 24, 2012 at 09:20 GMT | By

Microsoft are taking the Smoked By Windows Phone to another level by raising the stakes in the challenge to $1000, well, more-or-less.

Our lucky friends over the pond have the opportunity to take the Challenge at their local Microsoft Store and stand to win a Hunger Games Special Edition PC (valued at over $1,000) if their smartphone beats Windows Phone. Microsoft are feeling generous here because should you lose the Challenge, you may still walk away with a brand new Windows Phone. The challenges are Pocket-to-Picture-to-Post, Real-Time Information with Live Tiles, Using the People Hub to Stay in Touch with the People You Care About Most, Updating Your Status Across Multiple Social Networks and Local Scout.

This might be a good time to pull out that secret android phone (if you have one that is) or better yet, herd your unconvinced friends and relatives to your local Microsoft Store because they might land themselves an shiny new Windows Phone.

Angry Birds Space not coming to Windows Phone? We are not Impressed! [Update]

March 23, 2012 at 21:25 GMT | By

Remember when we told you that Angry Birds Space was not coming to Windows Phone on its launch date? Well, it appears that Windows Phone owners will not be fighting pigs in space for a long while, according to Bloomberg.

"We're the No. 1 app in the Windows Phone app store, but it's a big undertaking to support it, and you have to completely rewrite the application," gloated Peter Vesterbacka, chief marketing officer of Rovio Entertainment Oy. Its a shame that Mr Vesterbacka chose to ignore the fact that they are asking for a king's ransom from Windows Phone Users, charging $3.00 for a game that they offer for free on the Android platform. Huge undertaking it maybe, but one would think they would return a favour by supporting the Windows Phone platform given that users bought their game in droves.

"For the time being, it's too expensive for Rovio to adapt new games to Windows Phones. If you look at activations, Apple's iOS and Android are clearly bigger than any other platform. We want to be on all screens, but we have to consider the cost of supplying the smaller platforms. With Windows Phone it's a lot of work to technically support it," Vesterbacka said.

Having fleeced Windows Phone users, you would think Rovio would have the decency to farm back some of the loot they robbed from us. The current Angry Birds game on Windows Phone is still stuck on v1.0 (without a Mango update), which is a disgrace taking into account how much Windows Phone users are being asked to pay.

We hope when they decide that Windows Phone is worth their time after all, the world of mobile gaming wouldn't have moved on. In any case, Angry Birds is a one-trick-pony of a game and this overrated Space version is the same game on a different background. Call it a case of sour grapes but this WPSuperfanboy is not impressed!

Update:

It now turns out that Angry Birds Space is coming to Windows Phone afterall. Rovio's CEO, Mikael Hed told Reuters that they are working towards getting Angry Birds Space to WP7. Well, so much for much for my rant (above). Anyway, this non-news is making me lose the will to live!

Editorial: Nokia Right to "Bribe" AT&T Sales Reps

March 23, 2012 at 20:53 GMT | By

The tech news world has been awash with reports originating from WPCentral, that Nokia is set to splash out an eye-watering $25 Million kitting out AT&T sales reps with the Nokia Lumia 900. Nokia will finance a program allowing AT&T sales staff to trade in their current handsets for a brand new Lumia 900 at no cost. The program, which will see AT&T employees turn in iPhones and Android handsets for the Lumia 900.

I assume the experience of buying a Smartphone differs from country to country, but what strikes me is the consistent reports from people on different Windows Phone news websites complaining how sales staff always seem to want to herd them towards Android devices. This has happened to me several times when I've walked into a mobile phone shop to have a look at the latest devices. It happened on the 21st of October in 2010 when I walked into a Orange Shop to collect my brand new Samsung Omnia 7 on the day Windows Phone 7 was launched. The sales rep pulled out a sparkling new Samsung Galaxy S. I would be lying if I said the device didn't catch my attention. For a moment, I was mesmerised; I was confused and questioned if it was wise to pass up and opportunity to have the Galaxy S. That happened to me, and I class myself as a loyal and seasoned Windows mobile/phone 7 user. Can you imagine what that would do to an impressionable tennager, a technology naive middle aged parent or a clueless granny?

In a nutshell, that is why Nokia and Microsoft are right to employ this somewhat underhanded tactic. Google and Apple have been doing it for ages, so why not Nokia?

The main reason sales reps usually dissuade prospective buyers from Windows Phone is partly for financial benefits associated with driving Android and iOS sales, and partly the lack of understanding and knowledge of Windows Phone. We all know that simply playing with the gorgeous and fluid interface does not give you the full Windows Phone experience (like the idiot from ZDNet thought), when you add your credentials the you start to appreciate how wonderfully intuitive the OS is. As part of the deal, AT&T is reportedly going to train sales staff on Windows Phone, coupled with the ability to use Windows Phone as a daily driver, it wont be long before the sales staff start seeing what we have all been saying all along, that Windows Phone is awesome!

Yes it's bribery of some form or the other and will most likely cost Nokia a few bob or two, however, this is definitely a win-win-win situation for Nokia, Microsoft and AT&T.

Nokia Lumia 900 TV advertisement [Video]

March 23, 2012 at 16:56 GMT | By

The AT&T Nokia Lumia 900 Windows Phone has been spotted in what seems to be a new TV advertisement. The advert seems to focus on the gorgeous industrial design of the Nokia offering, a departure from the usual no-message, loud music and flashing lights adverts we have come to expect, that are enough induce an epileptic fit.

Without saying a word, this advert manages to communicate how the Nokia Lumia 900 is unlike any other phone out there, in both aesthetics and industrial design. The Lumia 900 is expected to be out early April and will cost $99 on contract.

We really like this advert. What do you guys think? Don't forget to leave a comment at the bottom.

Nokia Lumia 900 "Coming Soon" page up on AT&T website

March 23, 2012 at 11:07 GMT | By

Just as the rumours about the AT&T Nokia Lumia 900 were going into overdrive, as if to stoke the rumour flames, AT&T have put up a "Coming Soon" page for the device without elaborating on availability.

There are no details on when the device will be available or how much it will cost. However, we expect the Lumia 900 to cost $99 on contract and will most likely be available on the 9th of April as latest rumours have suggested.

Marketplace Milestone: 70000 Apps now officially in Marketplace

March 22, 2012 at 17:32 GMT | By

Microsoft has revealed that Marketplace now plays host to more than 70,000 applications, with around 300 new apps being added on a daily basis. Having reached the 60,000 app mark at the end of January, Microsoft announced the new 70,000 Windows Phone app milestone earlier this week when speaking at the platforms official launch in China.

Whilst still a paltry offering compared to the more than 400,000 Android applications or over half a million iOS apps offered by Apple for its iPhone, iPod and iPad devices, its important to note that Windows Phone OS is only 18 months old, and with more than 100,000 registered developers, the 100 000 milestone will be reached well before Windows Phone 8 launches this fall.

Maybe then the high profile developers that have given Windows Phone the cold shoulder will sit up and take notice. My fear is that it may be too late, well I hope so anyway!

Nokia Contests Apple's European Nano-Sim Proposal

March 22, 2012 at 16:37 GMT | By

Apple is facing criticism from Nokia, Motorola and RIM over its plans for a new nano-SIM standard to be utilised in its new Smartphones. The Financial Times reported how Apple is seeking to get its nano-SIM proposal approved by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) over a competing proposal from Nokia, Motorola, and RIM - a battle which will most likely shape the future of all sim cards. Nokia has today issued a statement that accuses Apple of not meeting all of the pre-agreed requirements set by European Telecommunications Standards Institute for the new standard.

The Verge received a statement from Nokia, which breaks down the company's argument against Apple's submitted 4FF proposal:

Apple's proposal does not meet all of the pre-agreed requirements for ETSI's planned 4FF standard (the so-called nano SIM). The proposal from Nokia, RIM and Motorola does.

Nokia believes that our proposal has features which would make it easier for consumers to insert and remove the SIM without damage. Additionally, our proposed SIM has different dimensions from a micro SIM, one of ETSI's requirements, which would avoid it getting stuck if inserted by mistake into a phone with a micro SIM slot. Apple's proposed card is the same length as the width of current micro SIMs and so would risk jamming, leading to card and product damage.

We also feel that our proposal allows for more design options for the type of card reader, i.e. how the SIM is inserted into the device, to allow for a wider range of device form factors. Requiring a tray or SIM carrier would reduce design options and increase manufacturing cost, perhaps not significant for high end smartphones but it would be for lower cost devices.

The combination of our proposed card and the associated mechanics are smaller than those for a current micro SIM, allowing further miniaturization in devices. Though Apple's proposed card is smaller than current micro SIMs, when combined with the associated mechanics needed in the phone, we don't believe it represents a significant reduction in size. We believe that in practice it would mean it was just different from micro SIM, rather than smaller, which could be a barrier to broad adoption as an alternative to micro SIM, potentially leading to fragmentation.

In summary, Nokia believes that our proposed nano SIM would be easier for consumers to handle, enable a wider range of device designs and offer a true difference from the existing options with micro SIM. We look forward to continuing the discussions in more detail with our counterparts in ETSI.

Nokia also says that Apple's proposed card wouldn't meet the ETSI's requirement that there be no chance of accidentally getting a nano-SIM stuck in a micro-SIM slot, whereas its own card design passes that test. The 4FF ("fourth form factor," the technical term for the nano-SIM) is set to be voted on as early as next week, so we'll see how many last-minute power plays both sides are able to make ahead of the meeting.

We know who we are rooting for over this one. Seeme the billions in the back are making a certain fruit company from Cupertino drunk with power!

Microsoft aims to pass iPhone in China with cheap Windows Phones

March 21, 2012 at 17:58 GMT | By

Microsoft and it's partners are aiming to propel Windows Phone past Apple's iPhone in the Smartphone market by releasing devices costing as little as $158.

China is poised to become the world's biggest smartphone market in 2012, making it crucial for manufacturers and sellers in the battle for sales. Shipments of the devices, used to download games and movies, will jump 52 percent to 137 million units in China this year. Simon Leung, Microsoft's chairman and chief executive officer for the Greater China region said this to reporters

We will continue to drive the price down. Our goal is number one. Having a goal to be number two is not really a goal.

Windows Phone will account for 7.5 percent of the China market this year, trailing the 12 percent share of Apple's IOS and Android's 70 percent, said Teck-Zhung Wong, a Beijing-based analyst at IDC. By next year, Windows share will rise to 15 percent, surpassing Apple's 13 percent, while still trailing Android's 66 percent, he said.
"The Windows Phone ramp-up in China won't really begin until the second quarter, so the numbers are still low," Wong said. "From next year the ramp-up will be more rapid."
By 2016, Windows Phone is forecast to have a 20 percent share in China, ahead of Apple's 16 percent and trailing Google's 60 percent, Wong said.

Windows Phone officially launches in China (Photos)

March 21, 2012 at 12:12 GMT | By

Microsoft China has finally launched its first Windows Phone. The first Windows Phone-powered handset to be released in the region is the HTC Eternity (Titan). It features a huge 4.7-inch display, a 1.5GHz single-core Snapdragon processor, an 8-megapixel wide-angle rear camera, a 1,600 mAh battery and a sleek unibody aluminum case.

Other devices present (pictured bottom) were the Nokia Lumia 800c and ZTE's Orbit/Mimosa, though availability dates are unclear (Google translate isn't the best). The devices will be running the refresh of Windows Phone 7.5 "Tango" (build 8773).

With China is expected to surpass the U.S. this year to become the top smartphone market in the world by subscriber volume, timing couldn't be perfect for Windows Phone to make an entry.

Windows Phone Outselling Symbian in the U.K

March 20, 2012 at 16:00 GMT | By

Nokia Windows Phone smartphones has started to outsell Nokia's Symbian devices over the past few months, according to Bloomberg, which cited a study from research firm Kantar Worldpanel.

Of the U.K. mobile phone purchasers interviewed in the last three months, 2.5 percent said they purchased a Lumia phone, while 2.4 percent bought devices using the company's older Symbian operating system, according to the Kantar report. The Lumia 800 accounted for 87 percent of Nokia's Windows Phone sales.

"The fact that Windows Phone sales have overtaken Symbian based on one handset is encouraging," said Dominic Sunnebo, a London-based Kantar analyst. "However, Nokia will need to expand the range quickly in order to keep up with the slew of next generation competitor products being launched in quarter two."

I couldn't have put it better myself. I fear that Windows Phone appears to be playing catch-up to Android and iOS. While current Android devices are featuring multiple-core processors, NFC, HD resolutions and more, Windows devices are still being released with specs that one can refer to as "last year's." Windows Phone 8 (Apollo) holds so much promise yet it seems so distant.

Nokia is building a new SUPER phone to take down the iPhone

March 20, 2012 at 15:10 GMT | By

Just when we were rubbing our hands in anticipation, waiting for the gorgeous Nokia Lumia 900 to make a long over-due appearance, we get wind of a new SUPER phone in the works. Nokia is apparently working on another smartphone with new technology that will blow all competition out of the water.

Talking to the Finnish newspaper Kauppalehti, Nokia design boss Marko Ahtisaari said that the company is currently working on a revolutionary new smartphone that will make other handsets seem dated.

According to the Nokia executive, Apple's user interface on the iPhone is "poorly designed" and convoluted. "The road from the kitchen into the dining room is always through the front door," Ahtisaari told Kauppalehti.

We all know that the iPhone is overrated but it takes a brave man to publicly diss it, let alone one that is associated to Nokia. Many have been billed as iPhone Killers in the past and they al failed. This is big talk indeed and we certainly hope they will back it up...

BBC iPlayer app finally launches for all UK Xbox 360s (Windows Phone app in pipeline)

March 20, 2012 at 14:22 GMT | By

Looks like the old Beeb (British Broadcasting Corporation)has finally come to it's senses by releasing an iPlayer app for UK Xbox users. It's rather surprising that the BBC has dragged it's feet so this long, considering that Sony's PlayStation and the Wii have had iPlayer apps available for a while regardless of the fact that Microsoft's Xbox has been the pace-setter in the video game console world for a while now.

It also seems like an iPlayer app for Windows Phone is in the pipeline. Speaking to Digital Spy, Head of iPlayer David Price said:

"What I can say about that is we make our services available through a number of ways, whether they're applications or the mobile web experience. We're working with the teams at Microsoft to ensure that we can deliver an iPlayer experience on those devices."

It warms the heart to learn that old and stubborn institutions like the BBC are taking Windows Phone seriously. Sky AnyTime+ is confirmed for later this year while a Windows Phone 7 is reportedly being developed. Now Google, where is my YouTube app?

Sprint to launch an LTE Windows Phone 8?

March 20, 2012 at 13:21 GMT | By

SprintFeed is reporting that the Sprint is looking to launch a new LTE-enabled handset later this year, one that'll run Apollo (Windows Phone 8). Of course this rumour is nothing new as we have reported in the past.

Sprintfeed claim that sources familiar with Sprint's LTE game plan have advised them that the company has plans to begin development on a new LTE Windows Phone device. This tallies with recent reports stating that Sprint had been eyeing Qualcomm's MSM8960 and hinted that Nokia could be the OEM tasked with bringing this device to life.

Though we will consign this one to our rumour bin, it's still encouraging to hear the rumour resurface. It's about time Sprint showed Windows Phone some love!

Hands On: White Nokia Lumia 900 (video)

March 16, 2012 at 11:31 GMT | By

Lucky folk over at Newgadgets.de got to play with the forthcoming white Nokia Lumia 900. The device looks massive (maybe it's the guy's small hands) with with gorgeous clear black 4.3" clear black screen. The slick and glossy white finish will be the choice colour for many I'm sure.

Save for the rather unwise background choice and the guy's reflection showing him to be reading off a piece of paper, its a nice video indeed.

ZDNet's James Kendrick claims Windows Phone is a passionless platform

March 15, 2012 at 15:37 GMT | By

James Kendrick (pictured right), an editor at ZDNet has taken time out to write an almighty piece of rubbish of an article trolling Windows Phone. The dinosaur can be forgiven for trying to stay relevant in the tech space but this is attention-seeking-gone-too-far. What's even more bemusing is the fact that a mildly respected site like ZDNet is allowing 'dinosaur' Kendrick to drag them down with him. This is only my opinion but I think ZDNet could do with a little injection of youth within their editorial ranks.

I mean, you only have to look at the bloke to know that it's rather unsafe to take tech advice from him. It's almost like going to your granddad for advice on your next gadget purchase, which sounds WRONG!

Ok, that's my rant over and done with. Now, Mr Kendrick is accusing Windows Phone of being passionless. This is after he say he "spent a week in phone stores playing with Windows Phone devices." Pardon me but I have always been of the opinion of that a self-respecting tech writer should spend reasonable time with a device if they are to deliver an opinion that will be respected and taken seriously, a bit like what The Verge's Chris is doing. These are some of the damning words from Mr Kendrick:

I am a mobile enthusiast of the first order, I like phones, tablets, laptops, you name it and they get my motor running. I can pick up just about any device and get excited about something no matter what it is.

Take Android for instance. No matter what hardware a phone uses, Android as a platform stimulates the geek in me when I use one. I attribute that to the ability to customize every aspect of operation, especially the user interface.

The multiple home screens with folders and widgets let me make any Android phone feel like it was made special for me. In just a few moments with an Android phone I can make it look, feel, and operate just like I want. That makes using one a real joy, and a constant source of excitement about the phone.

Even iOS gets me excited using the iPhone. It's not as customizable as Android by any means, but the ability to organize apps into meaningful folders works well for me. I put favorite apps into the dock making them always one tap away, and I like that. Like Android, the concise multi-page home screens lets me organize everything just like I want, and that makes it a joy to use.

That doesn't happen to me using a Windows Phone. The home screen looks polished, don't get me wrong. I can drag the tiles around to any order I want, but it doesn't feel personal. Perhaps it is the constant scrolling of the home screen to find that particular tile I need. Multiple pages would work better than a long screen with constant scrolling. No matter what I do with a Windows Phone home screen, it is still boring. More accurately, it doesn't invoke that geeky passion the other platforms do through use.

I am about to lose my rag! Enough said, what do you guys think of this?

Nokia working on own tablet: Design Chief Marko Ahtisaari

March 15, 2012 at 15:37 GMT | By

Nokia is widely expected to launch an own tablet using Microsoft's Windows 8 software later this year. Nokia design chief Marko Ahtisaari more-or-less confirmed this in a recent interview with Reuters.

"We are working on it," he was quoted as saying."We continue to eye the tablet space with interest, but have made no specific announcements"

Good news to some of us Windows ecosystem fanboys. What sort of hardware and design would you like to see from a Nokia Windows 8 tablets?

Nokia granted slide-to-unlock patent of their own

March 15, 2012 at 14:05 GMT | By

Nokia has been granted a slide-to-unlock patent of their own. Although the sliding motion is present, it differs from Apple's own patent.

While Apple's slide-to-unlock patent features sliding horizontally across the screen along a predefined path, Nokia's version involves sliding an icon across a screen until it reveals a hidden app, which will launch once the icon that's being dragged fully covers it.

It has to be noted that none of Nokia's current devices utilise this feature and considering that Symbian will be phased out, could this find it's way to future Windows Phone builds now that Nokia and Microsoft literally share a bed? My guess is probably not as Windows Phone already had a great slide-to-unlock of it's own. What do you guys think?

Hammer Time: Nokia Lumia 800 does the Running Man!

March 15, 2012 at 12:15 GMT | By

Here is a funny and creative advert for the Nokia Lumia 800 (with Androids as backing dancers) from Telus. The advert features the Nokia Lumia 800 as the front-man of a troupe of devices dancing to MC Hammer's U Can't Touch This, while being chased by a cheetah. Each time the Cheetah get close, the Lumia 800 disappears in a cloud of smoke.

Funny and original indeed, but more importantly, it's nice to see carriers doing their bit for Windows Phone!

Samsung SGH-i667 "Mandel" LTE Windows Phone pays FCC an overdue visit

March 14, 2012 at 20:51 GMT | By

One's memory fails to serve when one attempts to recollect a time this site wrote about an impending Samsung Windows Phone device. Perhaps this website has not put pen to paper about matters regarding the South Korean giant since it's inception. Well, one can certainly say the drought might be over as there seems to be a new Samsung Windows Phone device in the horizon.

Enter the aptly named 'Mandel' (SGH-i667) which is no news to an ear keen on Windows Phone. It was rumoured pre-and-post-Mango but interest since subsided as a rival OEM from Espoo monopolised all Windows Phone headlines.

Not much is known about the Mandel at present besides that it's LTE capable and bears a 4.3" screen, but be best guaranteed that when more details surface, we will be ready to put finger to key pad.

Windows Phone "Tango" Officially Launching in China on March 21st

March 14, 2012 at 17:46 GMT | By

Chinese press have reportedly received invitations from Microsoft China to a launch event for Windows 7.5 "Tango". The invitation announces that "the carefully designed, refined, and all-new Windows Phone 7.5 will be landing in China." The event is set to be held in Beijing on March 21st, check out the invitation below (a grasp of chinese would be helpful):

Rumours have it that Nokia will be launching the Lumia 610S, Lumia 719C, and the Lumia 800C with China Telecom, and the devices are expected to be able to run on the carrier's CDMA2000 network.

We hope this where Windows Phone begins to grab some much needed market share, considering that Nokia already owns 16.1% of the Chinese mobile phone market.

Microsoft: "Tango" Was Just a Codename for Engineering Work

March 14, 2012 at 11:48 GMT | By

Seems like Microsoft are keen to downplay the "Tango" update, insisting that though there will be higher build numbers, the OS is still going to be called "Windows Phone 7.5".

This of course goes a long way in quashing recent rumours about "Tango" being called "Windows Phone Refresh." Microsoft's PR firm told Pocket Now that "Tango" name was just a code name for the engineering work that was contributed to the minor update.

We know that "Tango" will bring new features and fixes but wonder why they are so keen on down-playing the operating system refresh. Maybe they are readying us for disappointment. What do you guys think?

AT&T Nokia Lumia 900 landing on the 8th April?

March 14, 2012 at 11:10 GMT | By

A person claiming to be an AT&T assistant manager has posted on the Verge's forums claiming their stores have received demo units of the Nokia Lumia 900 and that staff are to attend mandatory training on the handset soon. This is how the post reads:

I'm an assistant manager with an att store in California. We are gearing up for the Nokia lumia launch and were going all out. cant say much more but its tentative for April 8 as far as I understand. I And other sales reps are having mandatory trainings on the Nokia 900 soon and that usually means its launching shortly after. You don't have to believe me but just giving you a heads up. I think early reports said April 18th so its a little earlier than that. Cant wait! we got the demo in last week and I've been very impressed with the phone. Its a sexy bitch. As far as colors go we are only getting black and cyan. the white one will come when the phone performs well, like we did with the sky rocket (piece of crap phone IMO) Anyways just thought i'd pass along some tid bits.

Sounds like this is a rumour to counter-act another. The story of the Nokia Lumia 900 launch is getting old now. It is high time AT&T made some sort of announcement though one might say they are not obliged to - they have remained tight lipped about the Lumia 900 launch after all. We just pray that the AT&T actually make use of the mandatory training by refraining from diverting potential clients to the Android stall.

March 12, 2012 at 20:57 GMT | By

Compal Communications is expected to ship four million smartphones in the second quarter of 2012, with Nokia's Lumia 610 accounting for the bulk of the shipments, according to a Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) report.

There are an estimated 10 million Windows Phone devices out there at present, so an additional 4 million devices will boost market share, giving the Microsoft operating system some much needed traction.

We expect most of the Nokia Lumia 610 shipments to land in emerging markets while it's bigger sibling, the Lumia 900 to debut in Europe and the west.

Nokia to launch 10-inch dual-core Windows 8 tablet by Q4

March 12, 2012 at 17:18 GMT | By

Nokia is ready to venture into the tablet PC market by releasing a 10-inch Windows 8-based tablet PC set on Qualcomm's dual-core platform in the fourth quarter of 2012 at the earliest, according to Digitimes. The technology-focused industry publication also reports that Nokia will build upon its manufacturing contacts in Asia, outsourcing production to Compal Electronics. The first allocation of tablets is expected to total more than 200,000 units.

We hope Nokia pads will come with same industrial design and aesthetics that we've come to expect from the Finnish giant.

Starbucks Finder: Find your closest, open Starbucks stores and pay with your phone

March 12, 2012 at 10:48 GMT | By

We have a confession to make. We will forever be hopeless Starbucks addicts... and we also love Windows Phone.

We saw the need for a metro-style Starbucks app in the marketplace with essentials that every Starbucks lover would want: mobile payment and finding the open stores nearest you.

So, we crafted (with all the care that a Starbucks barista puts into your favorite drink) Starbucks Finder for all the other WP7 users out there. And, best of all... it's free. We hope you check it out and spread the word. Happy Starbucks finding!

Store Locator:
At a glance, see a list of nearby Starbucks locations and whether they are open or closed based on color. View store details for each location (such as drive through or store type) and get one-click directions to the Starbucks of your choice. You can browse the nearest stores on a map. Green pushpins are stores that are currently open. Gray pushpins are stores that are currently closed. Most importantly, with Starbucks Finder you will never again make a trek to Starbucks, only to find yourself left in the cold, peering longingly through the locked door of a recently closed store. If a Starbucks is closing soon, Starbucks Finder shows you how many minutes you have left to get there.

Mobile payment: Pay with your phone!
You can conveniently pay for your favorite Starbucks drink with your phone. Just add your Starbucks card to the app and your barcode is ready to scan! The app supports multiple Starbucks cards. We take security extremely seriously. Your Starbucks card is stored locally on your phone and your card information is never transmitted over the internet.

Features

• Mobile payment - add your Starbucks card to pay with your phone
• Supports multiple Starbucks cards
• Lists Starbucks stores near you anywhere in the world
• Embraces metro design principles
• Closed stores appear grayed-out

Farts VS Zombies is now available on Windows Phone Marketplace!

March 10, 2012 at 15:49 GMT | By

Plunge Interactive announces the launch of its new game for Windows Phone. Farts VS Zombies is an addictive game in which the gamer has to protect Japanese schoolgirls from hungry zombies, aiming gas clouds at their faces by drawing the trajectory with their finger. Get ready for crazy moments, challenging hordes of zombies, fart combos, the destruction of cars, enemies and fun special attacks!

"Fast-paced action, tension and lots of humour, all this in a ridiculous story. That is what people will find in this amazing game", says Jesus Bosch, CEO of Plunge Interactive.

Josep Pon, the project's Lead Developer confirms that "The first time I had access to the game design, I could not believe what I was reading; I've never seen such a combination of humour and action in a mobile game before".

Some people may classify it as a tower defence game, others as a strategy game and the rest simply as an arcade action game. Farts VS Zombies is the result of a combination of genres and the parody of multiple existing games that no "gamer" can do without.

A mysterious Evil Unicorn seems to be the cause of the zombie virus; find your old friend Banana Max and together you can destroy the zombies to free the city from the Evil Unicorn. Farts VS Zombies includes a Story Mode and a Survival Mode, and you can even challenge your friends on your favourite social networks like Facebook or Twitter.

Get this surprisingly addictive game now on Windows Phone Marketplace for only £0.99! Introductory offer for a limited time. Feel bloated? Play Farts VS Zombies!

Nokia Lumia 719 passes certification in China

March 10, 2012 at 11:23 GMT | By

Remember a while ago we told you about a device named the Nokia Lumia 719 had passed qualification on the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) website?

The device didn't make an appearance at the Mobile World Congress 2012 as expected, however, details of the device has surfaced once again. We do have an idea what the device will look like but our suspicions are that it may turn out to be this mysterious phone (pictured left) that was 'leaked' by Nokia by 'mistake'. Chances are, it may turn out to be the good old Lumia 710 under a different guise, with radios intended for China Telecom's CDMA2000 network.

This time confirmation is coming from the official Chinese government radio management agency SRRC showing that the device has recently passed certification. Not much is known about the Nokia Lumia 719 device yet, except the fact that it will have a 3.7" ClearBlack Display screen and 5 megapixel camera, which places it in similar category to the Lumia 710. The device is said to be targeted at the Asia, North America, and South America markets.

It would be interesting to see whether this will be a completely new design or the Lumia 710 under a different name.

Nokia dishing out Lumia 900s to developers and job applicants

March 10, 2012 at 03:59 GMT | By

It's not too long that we were reporting about the rumours surrounding the delayed launch date of the Nokia Lumia 900. It now appears Nokia has begun distributing Lumia 900 devices to developers and job applicants for San Diego office vacancies

WPCentral claim to have spoken to one developer who confirmed that they had indeed received the device.

Also, Nokia is holding a job recruitment day in San Diego on March 15th for over 100 new positions at their offices located there. Job applicants will be entered into a raffle, where a Nokia Lumia 900 will be given out to the lucky ones every 30 minutes.

The Verge's Chris Ziegler to use Nokia Lumia 900

March 10, 2012 at 03:30 GMT | By

I know some might think this is not worth reporting, especially after the Molly Wood debacle. But I can assure you, this is as far as it can get from fandroid Molly giving Windows Phone the once-over and deciding it wasn't worth her time.

Chris Ziegler, a Senior Editor at The Verge has decided to take on the Nokia Lumia 900, hold on for it... because he wants to. Yes folk, that's right. At time when most of us had lost faith in these generic tech sites that are constantly trolling Windows Phone, Chris (pictured right) has decided to use Windows Phone as his "daily driver" after being honest with himself about the platform. He confesses to questioning himself why he is not using Windows Phone if he thinks it a great platform. He goes on to say:

I talk about the platform's beauty, simplicity, fluidity, and speed on every Verge Mobile Podcast or two. I really believe Microsoft has done something great.
Windows Phone 7.5 is a huge improvement over 7, and I'm more or less convinced that it's got what I need to operate and be productive on the road day in and day out. So, I've finally convinced myself I can use Mango as my daily driver. What about hardware? Nokia is the only Windows Phone manufacturer who's bet the farm on the platform, and its hardware shows - every device from Samsung and LG has been either forgettable, a rehash of an Android product, or both. HTC's been a little better, but they're not at Nokia's level on the Windows Phone side (and considering the circumstances, I can't blame them). But that Lumia 800... my goodness. That design! I don't think it's a stretch to say that the N9 / Lumia 800 chassis could go down as most beautiful device Nokia has ever made. In fact, I think you could say that it - along with the iPhone 4 / 4S - is the best phone design in history. That's not an exaggeration.

But then, Nokia... then you scale it up to a more reasonable and modern 4.3 inches, add a front-facing camera, and give it LTE. You offer it in your amazing shade of searing, unapologetic cyan, and you sell it in the US on AT&T. It's like you've personally made a bespoke phone for me.

One thing to say, welcome to the party Chris!

Second generation devices will definitely get Apollo (and maybe first gen)?

March 9, 2012 at 20:09 GMT | By

We all hope that Windows Phone 8 (Apollo) comes to all current devices, first and second generation. However, in reality, first generation devices are likely to be left behind. Thomas from WP7app.de claims to have spoken to Microsoft employees at CeBIT in Hannover and was reliably informed that all Mango (second generation) devices will be upgradable to Windows Phone 8.

The employee confirmed that first generation handsets will probably get the update, but not with all features, such as video calling for example using Skype which will be integrated into the OS.

We hope older handsets won't be left behind because of the unavailability of hardware such as front-facing cameras and gyroscopes. It would be sad to see great devices such as the HD7 and the Omnia7 obsolete.

AT&T Nokia Lumia 900 lauch pushed back to 22nd of April

March 9, 2012 at 19:19 GMT | By

The Nokia Lumia 900 launch on AT&T has been delayed according to BGR sources. The device which was initially scheduled to be lauched on the 18th of March, is now set for the 22nd of April because it hasn't received technical acceptance.

The handset's amazing price point remains unchanged, however, so those that had set aside $99 for the Lumia 900 can hold on to it for the time being.

Sony Ericsson Windows Phone Proto-type on eBay

March 9, 2012 at 15:13 GMT | By

An enterprising eBay user has put up a listing for one of the "Jolie" Windows Phone prototype handsets on the popular online commerce site.

The starting bid is fixed at $250, with a Buy It Now price of $500. The handset itself is listed as being 3G data capable, suggesting you could place your SIM card in it and use it — and features a 8.1-megapixel camera.

Thought the idea of owning one of these might be great, it's worth remembering that the device is as good as the last dodo, it runs a beta version of the Windows Phone software and it's highly unlikely that it would ever support a future software upgrade

Angry Birds Space not coming to Windows Phone on March 22nd

March 9, 2012 at 14:36 GMT | By

Looks like Rovio don't deem it important to include Windows Phone in the March 22nd launch of Angry Birds Space. If you can recall, Rovio took their time to port their world-famous game to Windows Phone, and when they finally did, we had to pay a King's ransom for half the game.

iOS, Android, PC and Mac users will get the pleasure of fighting the pigs in space on the 22nd of March while us Windows Phone users face and indefinite wait. Is anyone out there bothered? I certainly aint!

Windows Phone Tango 256MB RAM device limitations confirmed

March 8, 2012 at 20:09 GMT | By

Microsoft had been silently updating their Windows Phone How-to website, in the process confirming restriction on the 256MB RAM low-end devices. Lucky for us, damaster over at Live Side has listed them for us:

• Windows Phone Marketplace app restrictions » Some processor-intensive apps have memory requirements, and won't work on phones with 256 MB of RAM. You can check how much memory you have on your phone by tapping Settings > About.

• Podcast Subscriptions and Video Podcasts » You won't be able to manage podcast subscriptions on your phone or watch video podcasts if your phone has 256 MB of RAM.

• Local Scout » You won't be able to use Local Scout if your phone has only 256 MB of RAM.
• Fast app switching » This feature will not work if your phone has 256 MB of RAM.

• SkyDrive automatic photo upload » You won't be able to upload pictures automatically to SkyDrive if your phone has only 256 MB of RAM.

• HD video playback » You won't be able to play video compressed with some of the listed codecs if your phone has 256 MB of RAM.

• Background agents » To free up RAM for the foreground on 256MB devices, generic background agents (PeriodicTasks/ResourceIntensiveTasks) are disabled.

Unless you are not planning to purchase a ZTE Orbit or Nokia Lumia 610, this isnt worth worrying about. Also, if you so happen to buy one of the entry level devices, 95% of the apps currently in Marketplace will work. We hope our favourite OS won't suffer fragmentation to the extent seen in Android!

Windows Phone Google Search app updated

March 8, 2012 at 11:25 GMT | By

The Google Search app has finally been updated for Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango). The app, available from the Windows Marketplace. Early indications suggest this may be a US only update (damn you Microsoft!). Listed below are the new features:

Google Autocomplete: As you type in your search, our autocomplete feature offers search predictions that often match your intended search term making search entry easier and faster.
Voice Search: With our voice feature, you can avoid typing all together. Simply press the microphone and begin speaking your query.
My Location: With your permission, Google can use your device location to provide nearby results easily and accurately. For instance, a search for "coffee shops" quickly displays the nearest places you can go to for a cup of coffee.

HTC Titan II and the Nokia Lumia 900 about to hit AT&T store shelves

March 7, 2012 at 21:13 GMT | By

The HTC Titan II and the Nokia Lumia 900 are rumoured to be hitting the shelves on the 18th of March (which is around the corner by the way)

The Nokia Lumia 900 is also rumoured to be aggressively priced at $99 which i'm sure will attract a few bargain hunters.

Also, seems the AT&T site is teasing something big as "Coming Soon" on their site with signups to be notified and the Microsoft Windows Phone site now lists the TITAN II and Lumia 900 as "coming soon"

We are really excited for our neighbours accross the pond (with a hint of jealousy)

Nokia readying devices codenamed 'Prodigy' and 'AC/DC' for Apollo?

March 6, 2012 at 18:06 GMT | By

The Verge is reporting that Nokia is currently preparing two new Windows Phone handsets for AT&T, according to sources close to the company's plans.

The 'Prodigy' is expected to be one of Microsoft's "superphones" for Windows Phone 8(Apollo), due later this year, and the 'AC/DC' will be a mid-range handset; both will launch on AT&T.

We knew that Nokia will be bringing out the big guns for Apollo, but really, do all good devices have to go to AT&T? What about Sprint, Verizon and TMobile?

Nokia: We still need a cheaper Windows Phone to compete with Android

March 5, 2012 at 18:24 GMT | By

Nokia has confessed that although its latest Nokia Lumia 610 is cheap, it needs to create one even cheaper to take on Android.

Niklas Savander, executive vice president at Nokia, covering Brand, Marketing, Sales, Supply Chain, Customer Care and Information Technology told Pocket Link:

We have a lot riding on the fact that we need to get a lower price point. We are competing with Android. Android is in many markets at the 100 Euro price already, so that would suggest that if we are at 189 Euro with the Lumia 610 we still have work to do when it comes to creating a lower-end first time user smartphone.

Symbian is doing a very good job in capturing that first time smartphone user, but the platform is, of course, ageing. And the functionality isn't evolving as rapidly as it should, so we need to continue to push the price of handsets down when it comes to the low-end.

We cant help but admit that Niklas is on point. However, Microsoft and Nokia should never compromise on the fluidity of the UI and overall user experience.

More evidence proves Windows Phone 8 running on Windows 8's NT kernel

March 5, 2012 at 11:09 GMT | By

There have been a number of rumors circulating for months that Microsoft is planning to make some very major revisions with Windows Phone 8, codenamed "Apollo." Specifically, the word is Microsoft is going to switch out the kernel of the operating system (the Windows Embedded Compact code) and replace it with "Windows 8" in Apollo next year.

Now, more evidence is emerging to support that. WPDang dug deep in the registries of the recently released Windows 8 Consumer Preview and found a snipped showing "PhoneNT." This is a clear reference to Windows Phone 8 using the NT kernel.

The use of NT kernel will mark a departure from the existing Windows CE kernel on current versions of Windows Phone. The NT kernel opens a world of possibilities with wider support for USB Host, expandable external storage and more chips and resolutions.

This should also benefit both users and developers as Microsoft will basically need to update one system, rather than many and programmers would be able to reuse much of the code they write for Windows 8 in Windows Phone 8.

Nokia Lumia 900 coming to O2 Germany in second week of May?

March 5, 2012 at 10:14 GMT | By

Our friends over at WMPoweruser are reporting that a reliable tipster has given them some insight into the Germany release of the gorgeous Nokia Lumia 900.

According to their site, the Nokia Lumia 900 should be released in Germany on O2 the second week of May, as in sometime between the 7th and 13th. We doubt that Germany will be the first release, so if this rumor is accurate, larger Nokia Windows Phone markets may see the Lumia 900 even sooner.

The only issue we have is why it is taking so long for a phone announced at CES back in February to hit the stores? Why can't Nokia do what Apple has been doing for a while now, announcing devices and making them available within days. We hope the the hype wouldn't have died down by the time Nokia decide to let us know the exact dates these devices will be available!

Google Chrome Users Smarter than IE Users?

March 4, 2012 at 21:03 GMT | By

According to the number puzzle website Calcudoku, Chrome users appear to have the highest level of numerical intelligence when it comes to solving the puzzles on its site. The company recently published a study based on 2010 and 2011 usage data and parsed it by the browser of choice by its players.

According to the data it analyzed, people who use Google's Chrome browser were the quickest problem solvers of its puzzles compared to those who use Internet Explorer or Firefox:

Not only were Internet Explorers the slowest number puzzle solvers, they were also more likely to give up on the problems than Chrome or Firefox users.
Calcudoku's summary on the data it looked at:

These differences were found to be statistically significant (p = 5%). Based on the fact that Chrome users solve Calcudoku number puzzles the fastest, and that IE users give up on solving them the most, it appears that Chrome users have the highest numerical intelligence, followed by Firefox users, then by Internet Explorer users. Note that it does not follow that using Chrome makes you smarter, for example ("correlation does not imply causation"). Also, we can only speculate about the causes of the differences: perhaps Chrome is the browser of choice for more technically inclined people, who tend to have better number skills. And maybe because IE is the default browser for Windows, people who do not choose a different browser possibly are less technically skilled.

What do you guys think? I only have one thing to say, BS!!

HTC Triumph to be the first Chinese-localized Windows Phone

March 4, 2012 at 07:48 GMT | By

Chinese site, WPDang.com, is reporting that pre-orders are being taken for the HTC ?? (Triumph) at the HTC flagship store in Beijing. The Triumph is an authentic Chinese version of the HTC Titan. HTC is pitching the Triumph as "The First ever Chinese Windows Phone 7.5 device on the planet."

The 4.7-inch display Windows Phone is retailing for CNY 4,999, which is approximately $793 in U.S. currency. Currently online, black-market Titans can be imported for about $571, so it's not too much more to get a legit phone that will likely include all of the customizations we told you about that are expected in the upcoming Tango launch in China this month.

This should really put the pressure on competitors such as Nokia and ZTE to get their Windows Phone powered handsets into this region quickly.

Student project makes Windows Phone controlled AR.Drone possible

March 4, 2012 at 07:28 GMT | By

If you've never seen an AR.Drone before, it is a badass, WiFi-enabled, dual-camera, quadcopter that can be controlled by an iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, or an Android device. One OS missing out on the party in particular is Windows Phone.

If there is any question as to if a Windows Phone has the capabilities to communicate with one of these things, it has been answered. Three students at Texas A&M, John Brock, David Dornier, and Alex Perovich, joined forces for a project to bring the AR.Drone and Windows Phone together at last.

In the video below, you can see that they are able to use a router and a custom app to initialize communication to the AR.Drone. Using their Windows Phone they are able to get the copter to take off, stabilize, and land without incident. In this demo they don't fly the unit around, but they do show that it is, in fact, possible to operate an AR.Drone with a Windows Phone.

Rumour: Sony readying a Windows Phone device for Apollo

March 3, 2012 at 17:00 GMT | By

If you are an avid Windows Phone fan you will have seen the Sony-Ericsson proto-type (pictured right) that did the rounds pre-Mango. It seemed like the PlayStation company flirted with the idea of releasing a Windows Phone before bailing out at the last minute.

It now appears that Sony Ericsson or Sony rather is working on a Windows Phone that will possibly be launched in Q4.

The story now is that Sony is working on a smartphone that will be launched later this year with Windows Phone 8 installed. This is one of those times when you need to see it to believe it, and since the rumored device isn't expected to see sunshine for months, it could be some time before we are inundated with leaks about it. Until we see differently, (or different, as Apple would say) we will consign this one to the rumour drawer.

Windows Phone Version of the Nokia PureView on it's way!

March 3, 2012 at 17:00 GMT | By

We always felt that the Nokia N9 boob severely undermined Nokia's launch of the Lumia series. We couldn't help a feeling of deja-vu when the Nokia PureView running the Symbian OS was announced at the World Mobile Congress '12 last week. Nokia, having confessed to the world that most their efforts will be focused on the Windows Phone OS. The announcement of the PureView was a somewhat kick to the stomach for some of us fanboys.

Apparently, a version of the PureView is on it's way to the Windows Phone platform. Finnish newspaper Aamulehti reported today that Nokia's Jo Harlow has told them in an interview that Nokia is working on bringing PureView to their Lumia series. When asked on actually when this will happen, the answer was soon. A rough translaton of Jo Harlow's words, "I can't say precisely when, but it will not take very long."

Really, we should not be talking about this! This technology should be on the Nokia Lumia 900. Am I the only one who doesn't someone else's sloppy second?

Nokia rumoured to be working on QWERTY Windows Phone

March 3, 2012 at 10:00 GMT | By

According to the rumors, Nokia is said to be building this QWERTY Windows Phone and it is being targeted at business users, much like the Nokia E6, and will sport a Blackberry-esque design.

There have existed QWERTY Windows Phone handsets in the past, such as the Dell Venue Pro and the HTC Arrive. However both phones feature slideout keyboards, while the rumors are saying that this rumored Nokia device will be a candybar phone instead.

Is there a real need for such a device? Surely the demise of RIM serves as an indicator that such devices are no longer popular. What do you guys think? Any possibility or outright rumor?

Leaked Nokia Lumia 800 Firmware Hints At Improved Battery Life And New Camera Modes

March 3, 2012 at 10:00 GMT | By

The guys over at the XDA-Developers have got their hands on a new build for the Nokia Lumia 800. The number stands at 1600.2487.8107.12070 and it was developed by Vodafone New Zealand, however, the "hackers" said that the build will work on other carriers, and on unlocked smartphones as well.

The people who installed the firmware have reported huge improvements on battery life as they can get through a day of work now. Besides battery life improvements, the devs have also noticed several new features added to the camera applications including panorama and self timer.

Nokia already offers a Panorama applications so it remains to be seen how it's going to be integrated. If the self timer feature doesn't need any introductions, then the other two are pretty interesting as well: smart group shot, and action. There are no details about when the firmware update will become available for download, but it may be released by the end of March if things go according to plan.

Asus ready to launch Windows Phone (when the time is right)

March 2, 2012 at 16:35 GMT | By

Asus are ready to launch Windows Phone, but are waiting for the right time according to Pocket Link. Of course Asus built the Microsoft preview handset (pictured right) for developers to test apps on before Windows Phone 7 launched in 2010. But since then, the internet continues to be awash with rumours of a leaked handset doing the rounds that if you believe the internet will be launched at some point in the past, the present, or the future.

When Pocket Lint caught up with Benson Lin, the global head of Asus' handheld division, this is what he had to say:

We are very close with Microsoft. When we think it is the right time of course we will do it.
All of our spec, panel, storage, even design we can compete. I think we are strong to be able to compete in the market, and we have something different, we have the PadStation.
"In the beginning our strategy is to focus and focus and focus, When the time comes we will do it

Although we like to hear that Asus want to join the party, we can not help but feel that they might be late if and when they decide to jump in. We also wonder what they mean by the "right time". It sounds like they are waiting for others to do the hard graft. What do you guys think

Windows Phone 8 with dual-core Snapdragon S4 for Sprint?

March 1, 2012 at 17:05 GMT | By

Microsoft is testing a Windows Phone 8 handset with a dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm MSM8960 chipset for Sprint's network, The Verge reported on Wednesday. Qualcomm's Snapdragon S4 processor has posted impressive performance when powering Android devices, beating out Samsung's Galaxy S II (Exynos) and Motorola's Droid 4 (TI OMAP) by a wide margin in many tests. Microsoft hopes the chip will bring similar performance to the Windows Phone platform. Sprint has reportedly shared its LTE specifications with Nokia and may not introduce any further Windows Phone devices until Windows Phone 8 is launched later this year, The Verge claims.

With quad core Androids set to enter the market soon, shouldn't Microsoft and Nokia be working on quad cores for Apollo? What do you guys think?
